5th Graders Bring History to Life at the Charles H. Wright Museum

Last week, grade 5 classes at Lone Pine visited the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit for a social studies field trip. Students explored powerful exhibits, learned about important moments in history, and had meaningful conversations about culture, courage, and community. During the visit, students:

  • Learned about early Africa and the major regions, economies, and family structures of West African peoples before the 16th century.
  • Explored interactions among Europeans, Africans, and Indigenous Peoples and the consequences of those encounters.
  • Examined the history of the Middle Passage, the Triangular Trade, and the lives of enslaved and free Africans and freedom seekers.
  • Recognized the contributions of everyday people who built families, businesses, schools, spiritual and civic traditions, and shaped the city of Detroit.

Experiences like these help bring history to life and encourage students to think deeply about the world around them.
